The wisedom of Gamaliel
Jan 8th, 2010
Acts 5:38-39 “So my advice is, leave these men alone. Let them go. If they are planning and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown. But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even find yourselves fighting agai
Seems like most every group has a Gamaliel, the wise one who sits in the corner, seldom speaks, but when he/she does, the whole group grows quiet, because everyone knows what they are about to hear is thoughtful and wise. In this case it’s especially nice to see the Pharisees and Sadducees have this gifted one too…to bad they don’t listen long to his advice.
Peter and John have been healing and doing all kinds of miracles. People are being healed who fall under the shadow of them as the walk the streets of Jerusalem. What amazing power God is showing through them. They get arrested and the angel busts them out, they get arrested again, scolded, and sent on their way. The third (or more) time the leaders are struggling with what to do, and Gamaliel finally steps up and offers this advice…and it is good advice…not just for the Pharisees; but for most of us!
If we see something happening that is not of our doing; or not part of our denomination or fellowship, or church…let’s not immediately (and jealously) attribute it to Satan…lets just see if it has human or divine origins. If human, it will fail soon enough, if divine, we better not find ourselves fighting against God…not a battle we’ll likely win! Just this morning I read that a bunch of L. Ron Hubbard’s Scientology writings and documents have been found. After reading his original stuff, I’d easily like to dismiss this as further nonsense…but reading this chapter and these verses…maybe I’ll just wait and see and let the chips fall where they may. Few falsehoods stand the test of time. Furthermore, I just want to make sure that the plans I’m laying are not just my own…but have a divine source. Lord, keep me close today and let me always hear your voice…and obey.
