Evidence of God
Feb. 9th, 2010
Acts 14:16-17 In the past he permitted all the nations to go their own ways, but he never left them without evidence of himself and his goodness. For instance, he sends you rain and good crops and gives you food and joyful hearts.
This is an am
azing chapter. From Paul and Barnabas suffering to the point of stoning; to Paul and Barnabas being worshiped as the gods Zeus and Hermes! Can there be any more extreme reactions to the gospel preaching and gospel preachers than that? At the same time we might be going through difficulties (as me
ntioned yesterday) there are ample examples of faithful people who love us (as many wrote yesterday), and who may not worship us as gods (thank goodness) but who do love, support and encourage us. (I’m thankful for all who wrote to encourage me yesterday.)
But right in the middle of this chapter of extremes, we find a mention of a marvelous truth, as above. It reminded me of where I see we might be today. We are living at a time when nations and peoples the world over have gone their own way, including our own! But God has never left us without evidence of Himself and his goodness. In the middle of our own country’s polarities; we still see evidence of God and God’s goodness. With right and left wielding political paralysis whenever they open their mouths…we still see evidence of God’s goodness. With religious fanaticism that promises to kill infidels, and religious fundamentalism that does the same with its pharisaical legalism; we still see evidence of God, and God’s goodness.
I see it in the faithful neighbors who come to shovel my drive and walks while I continue to recover. I see God’s goodness in faithful people wrestling with worldly values that are no longer matching what God is becoming in their lives. I see it in a young couple with unemployed spouse, who still tithe, and still work to get out of debt…so they can give more! I see it in friends who are experience the maturation of middle age whose world view is caring, and whose life purpose is giving. I see God’s goodness in the beauty of new snow that covers the earth, like God’s grace covers our messes. I see evidence of God and God’s goodness all around…I hope you see some today!
